The future of cord blood for regenerative medicine is bright.
That was abundantly clear from this year’s World Advanced Therapies & Regenerative Medicine Congress, which is now in its fifth year.
Once again, the congress brought together more than 1,000 attendees for three days of seminars and lectures, which were presented by some of the world’s most renowned stem cell scientists.
More parents are choosing private cord blood banking than ever before, according to new statistics published by the BBC.
The numbers, which come from the Human Tissue Authority (HTA), show that there was an incredible 60% increase in cord blood collection and storage between 2014 and 2018.
The rise suggests that young families are increasingly recognising the benefits of their baby’s umbilical cord, which is one of the richest sources of stem cells they will ever have.

Multiple Sclerosis is an autoimmune disease which affects the central nervous system.
An autoimmune disease results when the body attacks itself, in the case of MS sufferers the body attacks the nerves and strips the nerves of their insulating coating, called Myelin. Myelin allows the nerves to send their electrical messages quickly and efficiently; when it is stripped away the messages become sluggish and may even be sent to the wrong place. The nervous system can become attacked so severely that the nerves themselves may even become damaged.

Nobody knows what the future holds. Tragically, for 21 year old Kris Boesen it was a serious car accident that left him paralysed from the neck down.
Kris and his family were told that his paralysis would be permanent, however they put their faith in a clinical study that had the potential to reverse the damage using regenerative medicine. The treatment involved an injection of stem cells directly into Kris’s spinal cord and took place earlier this year.

In a landmark ruling this week, a French court granted permission for a pregnant couple to store their baby’s stem cells. The parents argued that due to a family history of terminal illness and other serious hereditary diseases, they should be able to keep the stem cells in case they prove useful in the future.
