More parents are choosing private cord blood banking than ever before, according to new statistics published by the BBC.

The numbers, which come from the Human Tissue Authority (HTA), show that there was an incredible 60% increase in cord blood collection and storage between 2014 and 2018.

The rise suggests that young families are increasingly recognising the benefits of their baby’s umbilical cord, which is one of the richest sources of stem cells they will ever have.

In the UK over four fifths of the population have at least one filling.

Fillings are required to plug cavities caused by an acidic compound that is released by the bacteria in our mouths. Over time a tooth’s dentine (the bony tissue that makes up the bulk of the white part of the tooth) is eroded, which ultimately leaves the dental pulp exposed and prone to infection.

Multiple Sclerosis is an autoimmune disease which affects the central nervous system.

An autoimmune disease results when the body attacks itself, in the case of MS sufferers the body attacks the nerves and strips the nerves of their insulating coating, called Myelin.  Myelin allows the nerves to send their electrical messages quickly and efficiently; when it is stripped away the messages become sluggish and may even be sent to the wrong place.  The nervous system can become attacked so severely that the nerves themselves may even become damaged.

Nobody knows what the future holds. Tragically, for 21 year old Kris Boesen it was a serious car accident that left him paralysed from the neck down.

Kris and his family were told that his paralysis would be permanent, however they put their faith in a clinical study that had the potential to reverse the damage using regenerative medicine. The treatment involved an injection of stem cells directly into Kris’s spinal cord and took place earlier this year.

Most cases of back pain are caused by problems with disks – the cushions between bones of the spine. Most treatments are not very successful, but what if you could rejuvenate a disk with your own stem cells?

Johna Lindell has had disk problems for several years. After her daughter, Abby was born, things got worse.

For years, ethical issues hampered progress in stem cell research. Now, experts believe that developments in reprogrammed ‘iPS’ cells will truly revolutionise the treatment of life-threatening illnesses.

It is unclear at exactly what point the phrase “stem cell” entered the vernacular, one of very few scientific terms that achieve the status of, say, DNA in not requiring a detailed explanation every time it is written down or spoken.

Stem cells can be used to heal the damage in the brain caused by Parkinson’s disease, according to scientists in Sweden.

They said their study on rats heralded a ‘huge breakthrough’ towards developing effective treatments.

There is no cure for the disease, but medication and brain stimulation can alleviate symptoms.

Parkinson’s UK said there were many questions still to be answered before human trials could proceed.
