A small study using umbilical cord blood stem cells to treat COVID-19 suggests that these stem cells could significantly improve survival rates and accelerate recovery time for critically ill COVID-19 patients. The study recently published in Stem Cells Translational Medicine included 24 patients hospitalised in the US suffering the most severe form of COVID-19.

Researchers have discovered that infusing umbilical cord blood has safely and effectively treated 44 children born with various non-cancerous genetic diseases, including sickle cell disease, Thalassemia, Hunter syndrome and Krabbe disease. The study is the largest trial of its kind to date.

In an exciting new development within the stem cell field, a man from London has become the second patient in the world to be cured of HIV following a stem cell treatment.
Alongside being diagnosed with HIV in 2003, Adam Castillejo was also later diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2012 – an extremely rare form of blood cancer. Shortly after, Adam, also known as the “London Patient”, began to receive traditional medication in an attempt to treat the cancer.
